Digital Nomad or Remote Workers Visa (also known as D8 Visas), were implemented in Portugal in 2022 to address the challenges of globalisation and work flexibility in new working environments.

These visas are available to those who work for companies based outside the country or who work independently and can work remotely from anywhere.

Remote work visas generally allow individuals to stay in the country for a longer period than a typical tourist visa, and they can apply for a Temporary Stay Visa (up to 1 year) or a Residence Visa.

Remote Workers Visa

Unlike the previous D7 Visa used for this purpose, D8 Visa is aimed at all those who plan to move to Portugal based on their status as remote workers.

Under the residence permit in Portugal, periods of absence from the national territory cannot exceed 6 consecutive months or 8 non-consecutive months (during the validity of the residence card), except in special circumstances determined by law.

The residence permit allows nationals of third countries (non-EU/EEA/Swiss) to obtain a temporary residence permit with the following benefits:

  • The opportunity to live and work in Portugal.
  • Visa exemption for travelling within the Schengen Area.
  • Family reunification.
  • The opportunity to obtain permanent residence after 5 years, valid for 5 years.
  • Eligibility to apply for the Non-Habitual Resident (NHR) tax regime.

Eligibility Requirements

  • To be employed or self-employed.
  • To have a work contract or service contract with an individual or legal entity domiciled or headquartered abroad.
  • To get a minimum average monthly professional income of four times the minimum guaranteed monthly wage, which corresponds to €3,280.00.

Digital nomads working from Portugal, under the D8 Visa, are liable to taxation in Portugal. The NHR tax regime may grant s reduced income tax rate in Portugal.
