New Digital Platform for Citizenship Applications

Portugal Launches New Digital Platform to Streamline Citizenship Applications. This week, the Portuguese Government introduced a groundbreaking digital platform aimed at reducing the processing times for citizenship applications. The platform, now available at Civil Registry Offices, offers advanced front-office functionalities designed to enhance efficiency and accuracy in the application process.

Key features of the new platform include:

  • Document digitisation immediately after the application is submitted.
  • Use of artificial intelligence (AI) to extract and auto-fill the applicant’s identification data.
  • Automatic classification of the application process based on the type of application.

With these upgrades, the entire citizenship application process—from the submission of documents to the final decision—can now be managed electronically. A significant improvement is the digitisation of communication with external entities, which has historically been one of the most time-consuming steps in the process.

According to official reports, the platform is expected to increase the capacity of Civil Registry Offices by 50%, leading to faster processing times. Furthermore, a new portal has been launched, allowing applicants to track their citizenship application status in real-time.

The system has already been implemented at the Central Offices in Porto and Lisbon, with a nationwide rollout to all offices scheduled for October 4th.

RME is committed to keeping track of these developments and will provide regular updates on the progress of this new initiative.
